The ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the freedom and unity monument took place under stringent Corona safety conditions on 28th May 2020. The guests included the Cultural Secretary, Monika Grütters, the former Bundestag presidents Norbert Lammert and Wolfgang Thierse and also the memorial architects Johannes Milla and Sebastian Letz.
The monument’s shell extends over an 18 metre wide lateral and a 50 metre long longitudinal axis. It consists of a weight-optimised space framework such as those used for bridge construction. The strongest point of the shell is around 2.50 metres thick whilst it is only a few centimetres thick at the edges.
The monument’s shell is movable. Visitors can determine the degree and speed of the incline with their combined weight. The gentle movement of the shell is ensured by a combined suspension and damping system.
